Tableau Quick Tip: Apply Filter to All Views on Dashboard

This tip goes out to my teammate and friend Lauren! She's newer to Tableau, only using it for about a year now, and is still teaching me new tips and tricks. It just goes to show that no matter your level of expertise, you don't have to be afraid to share what you've learned!

*If you only have 1 dashboard in your workbook, you can skip reading the article and simply use the Apply to Worksheets - All Using This Data Source option.

*If you have a plethora of dashboards and individual sheets you're trying to keep up with in your Tableau workbook then keep reading :)

The Ask: Apply Filters to All Sheets in a Dashboard

Let's say I have a workbook with multiple dashboards of Superstore data. On this specific "Superstore Snapshot" dashboard, we are currently looking at high-level company wide data, but now my end users want to filter by Region. We need to add this filter to our dashboard and make sure it changes all sheets/views in the dashboard.

The Long Way: Apply at the Individual Sheet Level

This is how I've been doing it since I started using Tableau. It's effective, but not as quick and easy.

  • Navigate to any single sheet on your dashboard (for simplicity we'll go to the Sales by State view)

  • Drop your desired field "Region" onto the Filters shelf

  • Right click the Region pill and select Apply to Worksheets - Selected Worksheets

  • Scroll down the (potentially very long) list of sheets and only select the ones that are currently on your dashboard

  • Navigate back to your dashboard

  • Add it to your dashboard by right clicking any of the sheets, select Filters - Region, format and customize as needed

This method isn't too bad when you only have a handful of sheets on a dashboard, but it gets cumbersome when you have 10+ sheets on your dashboard and who knows how many sheets in the workbook itself. Sifting through a long list of sheets and manually making sure you've checked off the right ones is time consuming and meticulous. Turns out there's a better way!

The Short Way: Apply at the Dashboard Level

Here's the super easy way!

  • Navigate to your dashboard

  • Right click any of your sheets, select Filters - Region

  • A new Filter for Region will appear on your dashboard. Place and format as needed

  • Right click the Region filter and select Apply to Worksheets - Selected Worksheets

  • A similar dialog box opens up, but wait something is different! ...Where did that handy dandy button come from?!?

  • Simply select that new button and click okay!

Now all of your sheets on that dashboard will use that filter!
